World Wide Technology Raceway at
Gateway: The Current Scenario!
After a time
of uncertainty during which closure appeared to be a strong possibility, World
Wide Technology Raceway in Gateway, Illinois, is again emerging as a successful
storey under new management, with a lineup of high-profile events bringing the
fans back. The present oval and road course were built in the mid-1990s,
although racing in St Louis has a long history. Drag racing began in 1967 when
Wayne Meinert built the first St. Louis Raceway Park, which was a modest
1/8-mile track. Four years later, more property was added to the raceway,
allowing it to expand to a full quarter-mile, at which point it was renamed St.
Louis International Raceway.
Drag racing
was the most popular form of entertainment in the 1970s and 1980s, but road
racers quickly demanded a local venue to enjoy their branch of the sport. They
achieved their goal in 1985, when a new 2.6-mile circuit opened on the grounds,
which included the drag strip and a portion of the shut-down area.
